Kildare Libraries Children’s Book Festival – Bringing the events to you this midterm break

By Ciara Hogan, Maynooth

Every October, Kildare Libraries helps to celebrate the Children’s book festival with a jam-packed month full of great events in schools and in our library branches.  The Childrens Book Festival helps spread the enjoyment of books and reading with children and families all over Ireland with the support of authors, illustrators, teachers, parents and of course librarians. This year, Kildare Libraries took the challenge of a fully online programme.

In recent weeks, we have brought literary events to schools all over Kildare via zoom, bringing the festival to classrooms. It had been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our school communities and it has been great to continue connecting children with fun literacy activities when we can’t visit schools.

Many of our midterm events organised have now sold out including a three day writing workshops with Author Debbie Thomas for 8 to 11 year olds, a two day teen writing workshop with Shauna Gilligan, a session with advocate, activist and now author Sinead Burke about her new book Break the Mould and a choose your own adventure workshop with Wayne O’Connor.

As well as events online, we have organised a catalogue  of on demand pre-recorded videos which can be enjoyed anytime over the midterm break on the Kildare Libraries Vimeo Channel  including Traditional Storytelling with a Kildare Flair from Niall De Burca and a 3 part Draw a Dinosaur Scene with Tarsilla Krüse.

We are thrilled to be able to still reach out and encourage a love of literacy in fun and imaginative ways online this October for Children Book Festival. So why not zoom in or vimeo an afternoon this October midterm. We would love to see what you create – don’t forget to share with us on social media
